Our Chaperone Policy

Patients are entitled to request a chaperone during any consultation, examination, or procedure where they feel it is necessary. Clinicians may also ask for a chaperone at any point during the consultation. The chaperone may be a family member or friend, although it is preferred that the chaperone is a trained member of staff.

Patients are advised to request a chaperone when booking their appointment so that appropriate arrangements can be made and to avoid any delays. Healthcare professionals may also require a chaperone to be present for certain consultations.

All staff are familiar with and have received the relevant information regarding this Chaperone Policy. Staff who act as chaperones understand their role and responsibilities, and are competent to perform the task. Clinical staff who undertake chaperone duties will usually have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Non-clinical staff who act as chaperones will typically require a DBS check as well.

The role of a chaperone is not universally defined, and it can vary depending on the needs of the patient, the healthcare professional, and the nature of the examination being carried out.

A chaperone could be considered for any of the following areas:

Emotional comfort and reassurance to patients

Assist in examination

Assist in undressing

Protection to the healthcare professionals

Our policy is compliant & supported by GMC guidelines. More information can be found Here
